Happiness/Unhappiness Research

HAPPINESS/UNHAPPINESS RESEARCH
The New York Times recently commented on new "happiness" research that attempted to quantify not only the types of activities that occupy men and women, but how much satisfaction men and women find in these activities. The NYT article was titled, "He's Happier, She's Less So," and was written by David Leonhardt; it was posted on-line on September 26, 2007, in the Times business section, if you would like to read the article.
Mr. Leonhardt discussed research being done by Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers at the University of Pennsylvania and Alan Krueger at Princeton. The bit of the article that struck me was that men who were surveyed reported that spending time with their parents was unpleasant 7% of the time, while women said that spending time with parents was unpleasant 27% of the time. It is unfortunate that either men or women found spending time with their parents unpleasant, but the differences between the sexes (7% vs 27%) was significant. Mr. Leonhardt speculated that part of the gender difference may be because women have longer "to-do" lists than men, and those lists include helping aging parents. Do you have one of those long to-do lists?
To help family care givers, and in thinking of those of you who may be trying to assist parents and grandparents long distance, this month's newsletter contains articles written by two of our E-Senior Services Network members regarding services that may interest you. Please see the two separate newsletter posts titled "So How are your Parents Doing?" and "Thinking Long-Term Care -- Think Technology" for helpful ideas for care givers, whether you live around the corner or across the country from your parents or grandparents.
