HOLIDAY REMINDERS

- Check on your neighbors who may need some special attention or assistance, and not just over the holidays, but on a regular basis.
- Take care of your pets. Shelter them in cold weather or freezes and make sure they have accessible drinking water.
- Space heaters are a great source of heat, but need to be used with caution. Please make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions for ventilation needs and general safe use.
- Reach out to others who may need some holiday cheer. Make a phone call, invite them to dinner, offer to cook a meal and take it to them. Offer to mail packages or to take them shopping. Try to hit the senior discount days that many stores offer.
- Offer to assist with decorating your friend’s home or putting up holiday lights; remember to return to help put away all those decorations after the holidays.
- Holiday lights and candles need to be monitored. Christmas tree lights need to be turned off at night and when leaving the home.
- Real Christmas trees need to be watered extensively, please check water levels daily.
Avoid overloading electrical circuits at any time of the year. - If using extension cords, please secure them away from walkways in the home in order to prevent falls.
- Don’t forget your local food bank; they need donations of nonperishable items or cash.
- If you can’t contribute monetarily to some local cause, consider donating your time – it’s worth more!
- Gift giving ideas for seniors: a book of stamps, a gift card to the local pharmacy or supermarket, a magazine subscription, a long-distance phone card, household services (lawn maintenance, car wash, window washing, maid service, etc.), and dog or cat food for their furry friends.
